Why do you stay in prison when the door is so wide open?
Rumi
The Amazon forest is on fire, and I want to know what our problem is! I think I know, but I might be short-sighted. What could explain the ineptitude and lack of action by not only world governments, particularly in Brazil, but also by the citizens of the world? Why is this even an issue?
As I go along on my personal and spiritual journey, I am faced with challenges. These are learning opportunities, chances for profound growth! Learning on an individual level is important, however, it is not enough to change the world. I am realizing that as a species we are all on a journey! All of us together! Now that we have created television and the internet, we have created an interconnection that allows us to know almost instantly what is going on in parts of the world we couldn’t possibly know about without that technology! The industrial revolution brought about unprecedented change that paved the way for innovation and an easier lifestyle. All of this helped to contribute to how big our communities became. How big our reach was! We are globally connected!
Why this is important is because we have the ability to know what is going on in the whole entire world, we also have the ability to see beyond what the surface problem is to the real trouble beneath! To look deeper into what the problem is and really ascertain the root cause and possibly know how to make sure it never happens again! But we keep making the same mistakes over and over again! History keeps repeating itself because we, as a species, have not learned our lesson! We as a species have not reflected on our collective actions and brought about the change necessary to grow.
More than any other group of creatures on this wonderful planet, as the dominant species, we have the power to change our situation for the better. Why have we not?
Fear, we are still holding on to the fear we had when we were living in small family groups. Danger and death surrounded us and survival was the name of the game. In a way, fear served us then… maybe. But now, here we sit in the land of plenty constantly demanding more, like a bunch of spoiled children! We haven’t learned to share, we haven’t learned moderation, not as a species! We allow a few to have so much, while a good number of us are forced to go without! The truth is, there is enough for everyone to have evrything that they need! We may find that we can all live rather luxoriously, who knows!
The biggest change that I see as necessary, is a change of perspective. We need to get from viewing the world as a natural resource, to seeing her as needing our love and care! Especially our care! We should be nurturing her and all her creatures, including plant life! We need to get from greed, and power hungry, which closes our hearts, to love, which opens us to unforseeable realms of possibilities! This shift is how we save ourselves and the world!
If a fire is started i the Amazon forest, will the flames only affect those that live nearby? This question can be asked of any human act. Why was that fire started? Why are thousands of South Americans risking life and limb to leave their home and come here? Why are so many people taking up arms against each other? Why are governments, seemingly doing so little to solve these problems? We can only blame ourselves, each and every individual is at fault. We turn our hearts from love and we turn a blind eye to the real root of the problems.
Of course our governments aren’t doing anything, they are made of people just like you and me. Not enlightened humans!
And so, the Amazon forest is on fire and we aren’t doing much about that, inspite of the obvious reprecussions we will experience globally! I have no doubt that someone somewhere will profit from this, adding to the imbalance! Someone always seems to profit off the suffering of others. How do we change this? Whatever we do, we must set up a foundation of Love! Solving a problem from a place of fear, is like throwing fuel on a fire. I’m not saying all our problems will be solved,or even be solved overnight, we as a species have so far to grow! But grow we must!
